Highlanders remain perfect on season

The McLennan Highlanders opened the Joe White Classic with an 86-77 win over the Navarro Bulldogs Friday in Hillsboro.

McLennan struggled to start the game. Navarro led 5-4 with 16:14 to play in the first half and used a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to take the first double-digit lead of the game, 14-4. The Highlanders began to chip away, cutting the lead to four several times down the stretch. Navarro led 29-24 with just under four minutes remaining in the half. Alex Mills scored 10 points in less than a minute, highlighted by a four-point play, to put the Highlanders up 34-29. McLennan led 39-33 at halftime.

The Highlanders took their first double-digit lead two minutes into the second half and led by as many as 18 en route to the victory.

Jerami Grace led the Highlanders with 20 points and Mills added 17. Aundre Jackson and Brian Long scored 15 and 12, respectively.

On Saturday afternoon, the Highlanders defeated the Creating Young Minds Academy Yellowjackets 89-72.

The game was close through the first 10 minutes of play and was tied at 18 with 10:20 remaining in the first half. The Highlanders used an 8-0 run to begin pulling away and led 47-29 at the break.

The Yellowjackets pulled within 10 several times in the second half but were unable to get any closer as McLennan cruised to the easy win.

Grace led the Highlanders with 29 points. Jackson and Zach Charles scored 12 and 11, respectively.

McLennan hosts Lone Star College-Tomball at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
