Highlassies go 3-1 in Temple tournament

The McLennan Highlassies won a game and lost a game Friday on the opening day of the Temple Tournament.

The Highlassies opened the day with an 11-10 win over the Indian Hills Warriors with Morgan Hill getting the win in the circle.

McLennan began the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first. Danielle Gregory drew a lead-off walk and scored on a double by Amber Mills. Mills advanced to third and scored on a wild pitch.

Indian Hills got on the board with one run in the top of the third. Emily Brown singled and was replaced by pinch runner Sarah Wilson. Wilson moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a ground out by Nikki Boomgarden and scored on a McLennan error.

The Highlassies added one run in the bottom of the third as Mills walked, moved to second on a ground out by Aubri Hockenbury and scored on a double by Kaymee Gooden.

The Warriors added a run in the fourth. Kacey Duffield doubled and was replaced by pinch runner Emma Rickels. Rickels advanced to third on a fly out by Lindsay Moore and scored on a McLennan error.

McLennan scored one run in the bottom of the fourth on Cheyenne Bell's home run.

Indian Hills scored one run in the top of the fifth as Mallory Madsen singled, moved to second on a ground out by Chelsea Griffiths, advanced to third on a single by Abbey Murphy and scored on another Highlassie error.

The Highlassies added two runs in the fifth. Gregory and Mills both singled, and Gooden drew a walk to load the bases. Andrea Gonzales followed with a double, scoring Gregory and Mills.

The Warriors exploded for five runs in the sixth. Shannon Finneran, Chelsea Eads and Kaylea Rusch walked the bases loaded. Madsen also drew a walk, bringing Finneran in to score. Griffiths followed with a fielder's choice, putting Eads out at the plate. Murphy then singled to score Rusch, Madsen and Griffith. Overthrown balls advanced Murphy to third. Duffield followed with a single to score Murphy.

McLennan responded with five runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Bell walked and was replaced by pinch runner Ashley Silva. Silva advanced to second on a sacrifice hit by Summer Dolezel. Gregory singled. Mills followed with a single to score Silva. Mills was then thrown out at second. Hockenbury followed with a single to score Gregory. Gooden and Gonzales both singled. Hill was safe at first and advanced to third on an Indian Hills error, bringing Hockenbury, Gooden and Gonzales in to score.

Indian Hills rounded out the scoring with two runs in the top of the seventh. Finneran drew a lead-off walk and Eads followed with a ground-rule double. Both runners scored on a single by Madsen.

The Highlassies came up short in the second game of the day, falling to Angelina 5-3.

McLennan got on the board with one run in the bottom of the second as Marisa Flores singled, stole second and scored on a single by Dolezel.

Angelina took the lead with three runs in the third. Trina Deyo and Katelyn Barker drew back-to-back walks. Kassie James followed with the three-run homer.

The Lady Roadrunners added one run in the fifth on a home run by Sage Martinez.

The Highlassies added one run in the fifth as Dolezel walked, stole second and came in to score on a double by Hockenbury.

Angelina's final run came in the sixth. Autumn Birtcher, Deyo and Barker drew three consecutive walks to load the bases. James was then hit by the pitch, bringing Birtcher in to score.

McLennan scored on run in bottom of the sixth as Hill singled, moved around to third on a single by Bell and scored on a double by Dolezel.

The Highlassies closed out the tournament with two wins on Saturday.
 
The Highlassies needed an extra inning to defeat Iowa Western 7-5 in the morning game. Gregory was 2-4 with an RBI while Mills recorded a double and an RBI. Hockenbury picked up two RBIs and Gooden had one. Flores hit a triple.

McLennan defeated San Jacinto 10-8 in the final game of the day. Hill was a perfect 4-4 at the plate. Gregory went 3-5 with a double and 3 RBIs. Gonzales hit a home run and recorded two RBIs. Mills was 2-5 with two RBIs, and Hockenbury went 3-4 with an RBI. Dolezel went 2-2 with a double and two RBIs.

The Highlassies open conference play on Wednesday, hosting Vernon for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
