Jones Mitchell became the head women’s golf coach at MCC in the fall of 2017 after spending the previous spring as a volunteer assistant coach. However, Mitchell’s connection to the program spans decades. His father, Stan, took over the program as a club sport in 1996 and led the Highlassies to three national championships in his tenure with the Highlassies.

In his first year to lead the Highlassies, the squad notched a second-place finish in the NJCAA Region V Tournament to qualify for its 21st consecutive national tournament appearance. The team placed third at the NJCAA National Championship with Alejandra Rodriguez placing 16th individually to earn honorable mention All-American honors. The team also received Academic Team of the Year honorable mention recognition for a 3.51 GPA, and five Highlassies earned NJCAA All-Academic Student-Athlete Awards.

The team’s success continued in 2019. The Highlassies again finished in second-place at the NJCAA Region V Tournament and achieved their 22nd consecutive national tournament appearance. McLennan finished the season with a fourth-place finish at the NJCAA National Championship, and freshman Ellie Darnell received honorable mention All-American honors. Once again the squad garnered Academic Team of the Year honorable mention recognition for a 3.62 GPA, and four Highlassies earned NJCAA All-Academic Student-Athlete Awards

During Mitchell’s semester as an assistant in 2017, the Highlassies claimed the NJCAA Region V Championship and finished in fourth-place at the NJCAA National Championship.

Mitchell spent his college days playing golf at the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) where he was named the Athletics Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008. He spent 2008-09 as UTB’s women’s golf coach, leading the team to a second-place finish in the NAIA Red River Conference.

Upon returning to Waco, Mitchell spent six years as the assistant golf professional and manager of the Lake Waco Golf Club.

Mitchell received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from UTB in 2008 and a master’s degree in business administration from Southern New Hampshire University in 2019. In addition to his coaching duties at MCC, Mitchell serves as an academic advisor in Advising & Career Services.
