P.J. Carmichael, who has served as a volunteer assistant coach for the McLennan Baseball program for four seasons, was promoted to assistant coach in charge of hitting and position players in August 2025.

Carmichael joined the McLennan staff prior to the 2022 season. In his time with the Highlanders, he has helped lead the squad to the conference championship in 2022, four regional tournament appearances, three regional championships and three trips to the JUCO World Series. The squads have featured 31 all-conference selections, three NJCAA All-Americans, three Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft selections, 62 NJCAA All-Academic Team selections, 11 CSC Academic All-District® College Division At-Large selections and one CSC Academic All-American.

He spent Summer 2025 as an assistant coach for the Rockford Rivers of the Northwoods League. His responsibilities included creating daily developmental plans for hitters, coordinating and communicating offensive approach during games, and creating scouting reports.

Before joining the McLennan staff, Carmichael spent four seasons as a student manager for the Fighting Illini at the University of Illinois, primarily throwing batting practice and hitting fungo. He was also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Carmichael also spent the summer of 2021 working as the Director of Operations for the Kingsport Axeman of the Appalachian League.

Carmichael received a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Illinois in 2020 and a master's degree in recreation, sports management and tourism from Illinois in 2021. He and his wife Rhein, an assistant softball coach at Temple College, were married in July 2022.
