No. 4 Highlander hold off No. 11 Chipola
McLennan held off No. 11 Chipola for an 8-7 victory in the season opener. Olivia Garrett picked up the win in the circle.
Chipola began the scoring with two runs in the top of the third inning. Gabrie Flowers doubled and advanced when Payton Rodgers reached on an error. EmmaLee Essary followed with a single to score Flowers. Lilly Morris singled to load the bases, and Amaril Spires walked to score Rodgers.
McLennan tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the third. Ellie Brown led off with a single and scored on a triple by Karaline Smitherman. Brooke Fechner then singled to score Smitherman.
The Highlanders took the lead with six runs in the fourth. Jayden Sadler led off with a triple and scored on a single by Delanie Roeder. Lillian Jones reached on an error, and Both runners advanced on a double steal, and Ellie Brown singled to score Roeder and Jones. Macie Jansky and Rylie Marquart both singled. A fielder's choice by Smitherman put Marquart out at second. Smitherman advanced to second, and Fechner reached on an error, scoring Jansky and Smitherman. Tayen Allen followed with a double to score Fechner.
The Indians rounded out the scoring with five runs in the top of the seventh. Jadyn Riano, Kamryn Eaton and Flowers all singled. Rodgers then doubled to score Riano and Eaton. Hailee Green replaced Rodgers as a pinch runner, and Essary grounded out to score Flowers. Morris was hit by the pitch, and Spires walked to load the bases. Taylor Jefferson then reached on an error, scoring Green, and Morris scored on a sacrifice fly by Arce.
