Highlanders shutout Western Texas
The No. 8 McLennan Highlanders blanked the Western Texas Westerners 8-0 on opening day of the NJCAA Southwest District A Championship in Odessa. Natalie Klenda threw a no hitter with no walks and one strikeout in five innings to get the win.
McLennan jumped out early with three runs in the bottom of the first. Chayne Allen led off with a double and Traci Lowry walked. Allen stole third and Lowry stole second. Both runners then scored on an error. Brooke Kaelani Rogers and Brooke Fechner both doubled. Rogers then scored on a ground out by Macie Jansky.
Three Highlanders scored in the third. Rylie Marquart walked and Jansky singled. Jansky was out at second on a fielder's choice by Delanie Roeder, and Lily King followed with a three-run homer.
McLennan sealed the run rule with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lowry walked and scored on a double by Fechner. Marquart followed with a double to score Fechner.
The Highlanders advance in the winner's bracket and will face Odessa at 10 a.m. Thursday.
