McLennan Basketball sweeps conference weekly awards

McLennan Basketball players Howard Gaskins Jr. and Lanaijha Johnson swept the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference's Player of the Week honors following exceptional performances during the season-opening weekend.

Gaskins Jr, a freshman guard from Baton Rouge, scored 18 points with five rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block in the Highlanders opener against Community Christian on Friday. He followed that with eight points, nine rebounds five assists and a steal against Fort Sam Houston on Saturday.

Johnson, a sophomore from Center, Texas, recorded a double-double in the women's opener against Angelina, 14 points and 10 rebounds, along with two assists, a steal and a block.

The McLennan women are on the road today, facing the Blinn Buccaneers at 5:30 p.m. The Highlanders return to action Friday at the Joe White Classic in Hillsboro, facing the Dallas Richland Thunderducks at 4 p.m.
