Highlanders rattle Rangers
The McLennan Highlanders rattled the Ranger Lady Rangers 3-2 this afternoon on the road.
The first set was tight in the beginning. Ranger led 7-5 before scoring the next six points to go up by eight, 13-5. The Lady Rangers held on to that lead for the majority of the set. McLennan rallied late to pull within five but Ranger held on to take it 25-17.
The Highlanders opened the second set on a 2-0 run before Ranger tied it at 3. The Rangers took a four-point lead at 8-4 before McLennan didn't give in. The Highlanders rallied to trim the lead to one at 11-10. The Rangers rallied again, pushing the lead back to four at 15-11. The Lady Rangers maintained the cushion, leading 20-16 when McLennan began to rally. The Highlanders cut the lead back to two but that was as close as they could get. Ranger took the two-set lead, 25-20.
McLennan found its fire in the third set. Ranger went up by four early, 5-1, but it would be the Highlanders scoring the next six points to make to take the 7-5 McLennan lead. Ranger tied the game at 12 before going ahead 15-13. The teams went back-and-forth with the set being tied at 17. It continued to be a battle the remainder of the way. McLennan led by three at 23-20. Ranger rallied to tie it at 24 and the battle continued with ties at 25 and 26 before the Highlanders sealed it at 28-26.
Ranger took the opening serve of set four and went up 2-0 early. McLennan quickly tied the game at four and the back-and-forth battle was on. The two teams traded points before McLennan began to pull away, leading by as many as five at 16-11 and again at 19-14. Ranger rallied to pull within one at 19-18 but the Highlanders went back up by three at 22-19. The Lady Rangers then tied the game at 22 but McLennan closed it out 25-23.
In the final set, Ranger went up 5-1 before the Highlanders took control. The Highlanders tied the game at five and pushed the lead to 8-5 at the court flip. The Lady Rangers fought but it would be the Highlanders holding on for the 15-11 win to get the reverse sweep.
McLennan plays the final home game Wednesday hosting Hill at 6 p.m. with sophomore recognition prior to first serve.
